PATLIBs and PIPs

PATLIBs (patent libraries) were first established in 1991 together with PIPs (patent information points). These centres meet the European and Italian Patent Office demand for specialist bodies that are able to provide information on the industrial property system and related issues on a local level. PATLIBs are staffed with highly-qualified personnel and equipped with databases provided by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the UIBM. They are also connected to the network of PATLIBs in the other member states of the European Patent Organisation (EPOrg). PIPs were created to expand and branch out the work done by PATLIBs, and both centre types work closely with one another.

The PATLIB and PIP network offers information and assistance in the following areas:

• advice on filing patents at national, European and international level

• research services • organising meetings and seminars on industrial property

• translations of international patents and patents granted by the EPO or foreign patent offices into Italian.

Moreover, a set of advanced services are provided exclusively by PATLIBs:

• statistical analysis for the purposes of examining technological trends and the drafting of reports on the subject

• conducting priority searches

• technology and competitor monitoring

• conducting technological audits to check patentability

• support in establishing the economic-financial value of patents.
