Today and increasingly in the future, economic competition is all about the capacity for production, appropriation and management of new knowledge. Hence the ever more important role played by the universities and other public research institutions which have to combine their own cultural tradition with an entrepreneurial approach, capable of managing the risk arising from the transformation of scientific results into innovation at the disposal of society.
Many initiatives at national and European Union level seek to sustain this function of public research.
But equally important is the role of promotion, awareness raising and distributed information which the entire world of education and training must perform from the earliest years at school, to promote knowledge, respect and use of industrial property rights.

To this end, 2013 will mark the start of the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research to promote a programme of activities stretching over several years, aimed at raising awareness in the national education system (teachers and students at primary schools, secondary schools and universities) of the subject of the protection of industrial property and the fight against counterfeiting.
The activities will be directed at:

• raising awareness of the value of invention as a lever of progress and development, and of the negative effects of counterfeiting as a brake on creativity and a source of criminal activity;
• contributing to disseminating among young people a more informed approach to scientific knowledge and the patent culture, in line with the most current priorities for European Union intervention.

On this front, the DGLC-UIBM has for many years launched a series of initiatives including:

The “Piccoli e grandi inventori crescono” project
The "Concorso di idee" competition for schools
University educational activities
The Giulio Natta degree prize
